Folkestone members achieve wins at the recent 2008
KCPA AV Competition
The day started quite uncharacteristically for an audio
visual event, with grey skies and a weather forecast suggesting
that it would remain that way – had we been concerned
about blacking-out the hall unnecessarily?
As the clock moved towards 2pm St. Andrew’s Hall filled
up quite rapidly. The Mayor arrived some 7 minutes early which
ensured a prompt start to the afternoon. Once the ceremony
of presenting the “Folkestone Town Council Trophy”
to Glyn Bareham had been dealt with the intro panel was displayed
showing titles of the first session and battle commenced.
After a short break with light refreshments (included in the
entrance fee) the second session got underway, ending about
17:20, it was then the judge Keith Brown analysed his score
sheet and handed me the results which were quickly inserted
in the “winners” panel.
Meanwhile Keith explained his views on what makes a successful
sequence and why many had not featured in the awards list,
how many of the transitions available today – which
people new to A/V are attracted to - do not improve the result.
We then ran the winning sequences for a short while to remind
the audience of the sequence and Keith explained why he had
selected them. Finally the outright winning sequence was shown
in full.
Three Certificates of Merit awards were
made:
- “A Farrier’s Tale” by Ray Bridges LRPS
CPAGB (Maidstone CC)
A documentary telling the story of the author’s great
grandfather’s life as a blacksmith working a local
brewery.
- “Corfu Town” by Arthur Bailey (Folkestone
CC)
Another documentary highlighting a period in the author’s
great grandfather’s life, this time confined to his
military service in the town of Corfu.
- “Fun with Faces” by Jacki Moon (Seaford PS)
An amusing sequence changing features of the various faces
used.
Best Soundtrack
“Everest Base Camp” by Daan Eksteen (Folkestone
CC)
The sound track incorporated recordings made during the trek
using a video recorder, adding an extra touch of realism.
Best Transition/Fades
“My Garden Flowers” by June Hill LRPS CPAGB BPE1*
(Deal & District CC)
Beautiful photography fading from one image to the next transporting
the audience into dissolving colours and shapes.
Best Photography
“Go Wild in Japan” by Sandie Wilson CPAGB (St.
Mary’s Bay CC)
Superb photography of some of Japans wild life. Many images
worthy of entry into Natural History competitions.
Third Place
“A Tribute to Vincent Van Gogh” by Roy Carey FRPS
DPAGB APAGB
(Maidstone CC)
A sequence with “pace” using the bright colours
used by the artist, and “carried along” to the
song “Starry Starry Night”.
Second Place
“H G Wells in Sandgate” by Melanie Chalk (Folkestone
CC)
Melanie told us about the life of this notable author who
lived in Sandgate for 10 years, a good story with excellent
narration. The sequence was brought alive by the use Richard
Burton’s voice from the “War of the Worlds”.
Winner of the “Folkestone Town Council Trophy”
“Everest Base Camp” by Daan Eksteen (Folkestone
CC)
A sequence full of emotion, the audience felt they were experiencing
the highs and lows of the arduous journey with the author.
This sequence also won the audience vote as if to show that
judges are not always wrong!
